WWII defensive features visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 and 1946 [1 and 2], located in Walmer. These features enclosed the N and W sides of Walmer Castle (MKE7317) in the field immediately adjacent to the Castle. A small probable gun emplacement visible as a circular banked ditch was present on the 1942 photography, but was only faintly visible on the 1946 photography. Two parched areas mapped as extent of area and two structures were not visible in 1942, but were present on the 1946 photography. The enclosing barbed wire was visible on the photography taken in 1942 but not in 1946. However, the SW barbed wire was seen to have been extended and made up to 22.5m thick on the 1946 photography; this was mapped as two extent of area polygons. None of the mapped features were visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [3].

To the NW were located two WWII military camps (Mke41957) (MWX43651) and an area of WWII earthworks (MWX43653).

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
