Type of record:Monument
Name:WWII defensive features, Little Stonar, Sandwich

Summary

Sections of freshly constructed banking are visible flanking the northern side of a field drain on early 1940s aerial photograph. These appear to be defensive structures designed to impede landing of enemy aircraft or progress of enemy troops. A section of slit trench, possibly a covered firing position, is also visible between one of the easternmost banks and the field drain. They appear to have been levelled after the war and are not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area.

Sections of freshly constructed banking are visible flanking the northern side of a field drain on early 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. These appear to be defensive structures designed to impede landing of enemy aircraft or progress of enemy troops. They are known as “enhanced drainage” and were created by digging out existing field drains. A section of slit trench, c.30m long, is also visible constructed between one of the easternmost banks and the field drain, and may represent a covered firing position [1].

They appear to have been levelled after the war and are not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
