WWII bomb craters visible on aerial photography taken in 1946 [1], located in St Margaret’s at Cliffe. One crater had a ditch of 13m diameter with upcast extending up to 12m away. This feature was first noted on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and was still visible in 1949 and 1950 [2, 3]. To the W of this crater lay another crater of 2m diameter with upcast extending for up to 5m. Leading outwards from this crater were three rows of regular circular ditches, each of roughly 2m in diameter. This unusual arrangement of features were first seen on aerial photographs taken in 1942 [4] and were still visible in 1949 [5]. Both sets of features were not visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [6].

These features lay directly alongside the barbed wire that enclosed St Margaret’s Bay Coastal Battery (MWX43502). These features were therefore likely linked to the site.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
