Type of record:Monument
Name:WWII slit trenching at Sir Roger Manwood's School, Sandwich

Summary

A short length of WWII slit trenching is visible in the grounds of Sir Roger Manwood's School, Sandwich on a 1942 aerial photograph. It appears to have been infilled after the war and recent aerial photography shows the area as covered by grass and trees.

It is possible that this feature may represent a temporary air-raid shelter as the School is recorded as housing evacuees from London during WWII.

A short length of WWII slit trenching is visible in the grounds of Sir Roger Manwood's School, Sandwich on a 1942 RAF vertical aerial photograph [1]. The trench lies adjacent to St. Georges Road, at the southern corner of the School's grounds, and runs for c.40m parallel to that road. The trench appears to have been infilled after the war and recent aerial photography shows the area as covered by grass and trees [2].

It is possible that this feature may represent a temporary air-raid shelter as the School is recorded as housing evacuees from London during WWII [3].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
