Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible flood bank, Minster Marshes

A short bank is visible lying immediately north-west of Minster Sluice on the Sea Wall on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs. The bank lies between the arms of two flood banks shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping. Examination of recent aerial photographs does not show conclusively whether it remains as an earthworks.

A short bank is visible lying immediately north-west of Minster Sluice on the Sea Wall on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. The bank is c.21m long with rounded ends and lies between the arms of two flood banks shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping [2]. The function of this feature is unclear but it may represent a minor, unmapped, element of the flood bank system. The banking system appears to be of medieval to post-medieval date. Examination of recent aerial photographs does not show conclusively whether it remains as an earthworks [3].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
