Monument details

HER Number:MWX43327
Type of record:Monument
Name:Enclosure, Minster Marshes

Summary

A rectilinear enclosure is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. A bank demarks its northern and western sides, whilst the remaining sides are formed by ditches belonging to the current field layout. The enclosure measures 30m x 15m. All elements of the enclosure appear to have since been plough-levelled as recent aerial photography shows them as cropmarks. The enclosure is integrated with the field layout shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping and probably represents a previously unrecorded element of that system. The system as a whole is likely to be of medieval or post-medieval date and derive from land reclaimed from the Wantsum Channel.

An enclosure is visible as an earthwork on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. A bank, c. 6m wide, demarks the northern and western sides of a rectilinear enclosure, whilst its south and east sides are formed by ditches belonging to the current field layout. The enclosure measures 30m (NW-SE) x 15m (SW-NE). All elements of the enclosure appear to have since been plough-levelled as recent aerial photography shows them as cropmarks [2].

The enclosure appears to be integrated with the field layout shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping [3] and it probably represents a previously unrecorded element of this system, perhaps a sheepfold. This field system is likely to be of medieval or post-medieval date and derive from land reclaimed from the Wantsum Channel.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
