HER Number:MWX43226
Type of record:Monument
Name:Enclosure, Monkton Marshes

Summary

An enclosure is visible as an earthwork on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs. A ditch demarks three sides of a rectilinear enclosure with the fourth side formed by a field ditch belonging to the current field layout. The enclosure appears to be integrated with the field layout shown on historic mapping and probably represents a previously unrecorded element of this system. It is likely to be of medieval or post-medieval date.

An enclosure is visible as an earthwork on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. A ditch demarks three sides of a rectilinear enclosure with the fourth, north-western, side formed by a field ditch belonging to the current field layout. The enclosure measures 40m (SW-NE) x 20m (NW-SE). The ditched elements of the enclosure appear to have been plough-levelled by the 1960s as Ordnance Survey vertical aerial photographs of this date show it as a cropmark [2]. The field ditch forming the fourth side also appears to have been removed and is shown as infilled and part of the ploughed field on recent aerial photography [3].

The enclosure appears to be integrated with the field layout shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping and probably represents a previously unrecorded element of this system [4]. This field system is likely to be of medieval or post-medieval date and derive from land reclaimed from the Wantsum Channel.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [5].
