Monument details

HER Number:MWX43110
Type of record:Monument
Name:Boundary earthworks, Wickhambreaux Valley

Summary

Shallow earthworks of boundary features, demarking a small enclosure, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. Shallow earthworks of boundary features are visible on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. Examination of modern aerial photographs does not show conclusively whether these features remain as earthworks [2].

A ditch is visible demarking three sides of small sinuous sub-rectangular enclosure, 100m (SW-NE) x 34m (NW-SE). The fourth, south-western, side is formed by a long field drain belonging to the current field system. The south-eastern side of the enclosure is flanked by a bank.

These features appear to be derived from field systems created from land reclaimed from marsh in the Wantsum Channel between the 11th and 18th centuries. They may predate the current field layout, itself of probable late post-medieval date, as they are on a slightly different alignment.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
