Pump marked on a 1728 chart of Sheerness. Purpose unknown, may be a water drainage feature. Situated in a circular earthwork, which is the remains of Queenborough Castle. (1). Also marked as a well on the 1st to 4th editions of the OS mapping (2-5).

"The old castle well at Queenborough had been reopened by the Admiralty in 1724 but it was only in 1781-2 that a well was successfully sunk at Sheerness itself”. (6)
