During an archaeological evaluation carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, a post medieval yard surface consisting of a rough pebble matalling was located within the footprint No. 1 Cowgate Hill, in trenches 4 and 5. The surface contained occasional post-medieval brick and tile fragments and fairly certainly dates to the late eighteenth or nineteenth century. It probably related to similar surfacings recorded in Trench 3 and Trench 5. Two substantial post-holes were located in roughly the centre of the trench, both more than 0.40 m deep and their fillings produced a few fragments of pottery, glass and Welsh slate, indicating a nineteenth century date. They may relate to a timber structure that once stood across this yard area. (taken from source) (1)
