During an archaeological evaluation carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, a post medieval yard surface was located, this was cut by two lare post medieval pits, the function of which is unclear. They could be related to early services but no pipes were found in either one. After they had been backfilled these features, together with the metalled surface through which they were cut, were sealed by a layer of grey soil up to 0.20 m. thick (310). This layer produced no datable finds but had been cut through by the modern drain trench. (1)
