Summary

During an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, a brick edged drain covered with an iron grill was located, relating to, but also pre-dating, the construction of 1-7 Cowgate were found beneath the floors of No. 5 Cowgate. It may relate to the Town Porter's Lodge described in the 1861 census. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

During an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2009 at the site of 1-7 Cowgate Hill, a brick edged drain covered with an iron grill was located, relating to, but also pre-dating, the construction of 1-7 Cowgate were found beneath the floors of No. 5 Cowgate. It may relate to the Town Porter's Lodge described in the 1861 census. The drain abutted the east face of one of the cellar walls at a depth of 0.6m below the ground level. Below the iron grill was a ceramic drain pipe leading away to the east, beyond the excavation. (1)
