(summarised from publication)

During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the remains of a large scale Roman structure were revealed and have been interpreted as being part of the eastern section of the south range of a mansio. A section of metalling to the south of the southern wall of the main building was located, this possibly served as a narrow track linking to the southern opening in room 10.

The metalling was traced for a distance of 8.7m between 0.2m and 1.6m from the southern face of the south wall and was between 0.7m and 2.15m wide. Numerous coins were recovered from within the occupation layers overlying this metalling; these date to between 330 and 360 suggesting that this area was still in use at this time. (1)
