(summarised from publication)

During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the remains of a large scale Roman structure were revealed and have been interpreted as being part of the eastern section of the south range of a mansio. Room 9, which was the central room, was uncovered during excavations to the west of Cannon Street. This was a full sized room with underlying hypocaust.

This room measured 5.5m by 4.9m and had a thick opus signinum floor which had been worn away and cut by later features in a number of locations revealing the underlying heating system and the foundations of the southern wall. Most of the southern wall had been removed, but the eastern wall survived to a height of 0.6m and the northern to a maximum height of 1.09m. There is evidence of entrances to this room in both the east and west walls which appear to have been subsequently blocked with tile and opus signinum. (1)
