Summary
During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre, undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue unit a series of features relating to the late Roman Saxon Shore Fort were excavated and recorded. During these excavations a total of seven of the Shore Forts external bastions were located and excavated. This includes the complete example (bastion no. 15) which was located during excavations at a site which had been occupied by the Warren and Reynolds store, south of Tavenors Lane (B.M.W. site). During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre, undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue unit a series of features relating to the late Roman Saxon Shore Fort were excavated and recorded. During these excavations a total of seven of the Shore Forts external bastions were located and excavated. This includes the complete example (bastion no. 15) which was located during excavations at a site which had been occupied by the Warren and Reynolds store, south of Tavenors Lane (B.M.W. site).
This bastion formed part of the integral original construction of the Saxon Shore fort wall, into which it was mostly bonded. The bastion was situated directly on top of the earlier features of the CLBR fort, with no foundations, it was constructed of tufa blocks on the external face, bonded with a hard white mortar. It was D shaped in plan and survived to a maximum height of 1.56m with a width of 4.05m and length of 6.05m. (1)
