Summary

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the southern end of a substantial structure representing a barrack block (B24) was located at the Battle of Britain Homes site in 1971. Within room 1A of this building was a large rectangular pit; 1.9m long, 83cm wide and 83cm deep. It is a feature which is uncommon within roman buildings and its function is unclear, other wood lined examples have been used for storage. During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the southern end of a substantial structure representing a barrack block (B24) was located at the Battle of Britain Homes site in 1971. Within room 1A of this building was a large rectangular pit; 1.9m long, 83cm wide and 83cm deep. It is a feature which is uncommon within roman buildings and its function is unclear, other wood lined examples have been used for storage.

The proximity of the altar in room two of the building and the interment of numerous votive items within this pit points to a possible ritual function of this large pit but this is very uncertain. (1)
