(Summarised from publication)

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, the southern end of a substantial structure representing a barrack block (B24) was located at the Battle of Britain Homes site in 1971 and is today beneath the York Street bypass. Within room two of this structure was a small rectangular altar base abutting the north wall. It was constructed of chalk blocks with a core of pebbles and measured 1.06m by 33cm, surviving to a height of 40cm.

Five post holes and an area of burning were located close to the feature and may have been related. No features of a similar type were uncovered in any of the other rooms or in any of the other buildings, it is therefore very unlikely that it represents a structural element of the building in which it was situated. Its uniqueness and the recovery of votive finds in its immediate proximity both imply its probable use as an altar base. (1)
