Summary

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dovers Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, Substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. A large water pipeline consisting of a series of large earthenware pipes set in a shallow U shaped trench was located approximately 0.6m from the inside face of the fort wall, during a small excavation on Durham Hill (Durham Hill south site). (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information)

During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dovers Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, Substantial remains of the Classis Britannica fort were uncovered and recorded. A large water pipeline consisting of a series of large earthenware pipes set in a shallow U shaped trench was located approximately 0.6m from the inside face of the fort wall, during a small excavation on Durham Hill (Durham Hill south site).

The pipe and trench was traced for a distance of 5m running north-south across the site. The pipeline had been badly robbed but large fragments of five hollow pipes remained in situ one of which was substantially complete and was 14-16cm in diameter and 80cm in length. (1)
