A pier named 'The Newe Head' is noted on the eastern (seaward) side of 'The Great Pent' (today known as Wellington Dock) on early post medieval mapping. William Eldred's map of Dover (sheet 2), dating to 1641 notes that it was constructed in 1638. (1)
