During works associated with the A20 road and sewer scheme later Medieval walling was located on Mill Lane and within the bed of the River Dour. Mill lane, alongside the adjoining Townwall Street, Fishmongers Lane and Bench Street, on the west side of the Dour, are all Medieval thoroughfares, and the Medieval remains apparent on Mill lane and within the Dour likely represent the original buildings fronting onto the lane and river. These observations also show that by the later Medieval period much of the old river estuary had been reclaimed and that the River Dour had been confined to roughly its present width and course. (1)

Further Medieval features were located in this area during works undertaken in association with Dover Spine Main in 1996. A Medieval floor was recorded, it is noted that this may represent a reinforcement of the bank. (2)
