William Eldred's map ("The Platt of Dover Castle Towne and Harbor") of 1641 shows the approximate extent of the town and harbour in the mid-17th century.

William Eldred (born 1580) was appointed to carry out a survey of the land and occupiers for the Harbour Commission. This was completed in 1641. The maps comprise 11 large maps and are held in the archive of the Dover Harbour Board in Dover (as of 2016). The first map, which shows the whole town, is schematic but very detailed. The scale is 20 rods to one inch.

The remaining maps show selected areas of the town including reclaimed land and the houses built upon it and drawings of the Pier district dwellings. Each map is accompanied by a table showing the size of the dwelling, the name of the principal tenant and the "situation south or north with the name also of the strete where it lyes" (1)
