Trench 12 revealed six courses of the Saxon Shore fort wall, but the foundations were not reached. The wall is 2.50m wide and uses well faced tufa blocks averaging 0.40-0.12m high by 0.18-0.30m long for the exterior (southern) face, large unshaped chalk blocks, flint nodules and very sparse small tufa fragments for the core, and shaped chalk blocks for the interior face. The coursing is continuous throughout the whole wall, the courses were made to an average height of 0.14m by a layer of mortar - this was course cream coloured and contained frequent large inclusions, including flint fragments and water rounded pebbles up to 0.02m in diameter.
