The Grand Shaft was constructed to connect the Western Heights fortress with the town and harbour. Construction of the shaft began in 1804 and was completed in 1807. The initial Snargate Street entrance simply consisted of a small guard chamber to the north of the shaft entrance but the entrance courtyard was subsequently improved and altered.

The wall to the south of the courtyard formed part of the initial courtyard (1801-1860). It is constructed of yellow stock brick. The scars of later buildings are visible on the internal face. (1)
