This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for Cliffe parish. The report states:
"From its nucleus around Courtsole and the church, Cliffe prospered and expanded during the Middle Ages, selling wool to Italian merchants through the port of Sandwich in the 13th and 14th centuries and holding fairs in this period on the Buttway -an archery practice ground, now a tarred playground and recreational open space".
