Former miners settlement housing workers from Stonehall colliery.
The colliery was started by two French brothers in 1913. Following the outbreak of war in 1914 the brothers returned to France and the site was purchased by a French company who abandoned it in 1921. It was then purchased by Arthur Burr who constructed an estate to house his mineworkers. The original village was expanded towards the east, to the south of the railway and the colliery site and alongside the main Roman road from Dover.
The estate comprised detached and semi-detached properties, some of which were bungalows, flanking two main roads. Allotments were provided in one area of the
estate. A Methodist church and an Apostilic Church were established within the village as was a post office. The houses remain to the present day but have been subsumed into the modern village of Lydden. (1)
