During an archaeological evaluation in 1990 the chalk-block foundations of a number of structures were located in trench 3, probably of 2nd century date and related to the use of the area as a Classis Britannica fort (c. AD 138-208)
The structures included:
AB-3-4: section of north-south foundation, largely robbed in Roman times and partly sealed by a pebble spread
AB-3-6: line of vertical chalk blocks forming side of shallow structure
AB-3-7: stub of high level chalk block structural element
AB-3-9: small flint foundation
AB-3-10: west face of possible high level wall
Most related stratigraphy had been destroyed by cellaring. It is not clear if dating evidence was found but the excavators concluded that the features must relate to the 2nd century use of the site.(1)
