[TR 33337054] Late Celtic and Roman Remains found AD 1931 [NAT] (1) Late Celtic remains and Roman trenches, pottery, roofing tiles etc found 1931 in the gardens to the NE of the junction of Edmanson Avenue with Royal Esplanade. (2,3) These finds are not in any of the local museums and no further information was obtained at Broadstairs Council Offices where Hurd was Engineer for many years. The area indicated is a Public Garden of Margate Corporation. There is no record of any subsequent discoveries. (4) TR 333706 (Sited to nearest 50 m) Romano-British remains, site No.6. (5) This mixed site of Iron Age, Belgic and Romano-British origins was excavated between 1931 and 1983. During excavations in the Sunken Garden in 1931, pottery dating c. 50 BC - 100 AD was found. Roman potsherds were also discovered here in 1983. TAU made a resistivity survey over a crop mark in 1976, followed by the digging of two investigatory trenches which revealed a layer of water-rolled flints alongside the line of an anomaly found during the survey. In the first trench were Romano-British potsherds and tile fragments. In the second trench the chalk surface was cut by a shallow ditch to expose Iron Age potsherds. (6) Additional reference (7-8)
