TR 355 515 At least two Roman cremation burials were found during the construction of a new housing estate on the SW side of St Richard's Road, Great Mongeham, Deal in 1977. Fragments of a fine speculum mirror of C1 AD, possibly from Italy were also found on the site . The mirror was without its handle (see illustration card no 2). Burial 1 contained three complete pots. An amphora in which the cremated bone was placed, an unstamped Samian cup and a bottle or flask. Two iron nails were found in association. Burial 2 vessels had been badly disturbed by site machinery. An amphora contained cremated bone and there was a Samian bowl stamped DRIPPINI from Lezouxand dated mid-late Antonine, a grey ware jar and a flask or bottle (see illustration card no 1). Both burials are of the late C2 AD. The mirror possibly came from a third burial. Other burials were present on the site but most of the finds were removed by workmen and they were not recorded. The burials are now in Dover Town Museum. There is no information regarding the mirror's location. (1,2) Additional bibliography. (3-5)
