Before 1921 Samian, a quernstone and Roman tile were found in a sandpit near Deal Gas Works (a). Excavations on the Gas Works site itself, TR 374534, in 1895, revealed that the blown sand here was ten feet thick, over subsoil of four feet of peat, with bog oak (2). (1,2)
