In 1936, a late C2 cremation was found in a water mains trench to the SW of the first. [the OS siting symbols lie NW/SE]. In 1955/6, two C1/C2 cremations were found during development of the housing estate between St Richard's Road and St Martin's Road. Description from record TR 35 SW 59:
(TR 3440 5136 Sited to place name only). A Roman cremation burial from Great Mongeham. In October 1935 during the laying of gas mains prior to the development of a housing estate at Great Mongeham a Roman burial was found. A narrow trench 15 ins deep exposed a conical bowl and vase of fine grey ware 11.4 ins high and 8.9 ins diameter. The vase contained cremated bone. A small vase 7.5 ins high and 5.75 ins diameter was also found and a poorly made grey ware stump-footed and bulbous beaker 6.25 ins high of Richborough Type 96. A Samian dish, Form 31 with potter's mark JVCVNDVS F from Rheinzabern of C2 date constituted the fifth item in the burial. The coarse wares dated to the late C3 or early C4. The burial may therefore be late C3 or C4 in date incorporating a Samian dish some 100 years old at its time of deposition. There is no indication of the burial's whereabouts. (1)
