[Name: TR 357529] Roman remains found AD 1921 [NAT] (1)
Roman tile fragments (including part of a box flue tile) were found in 1914 during the laying-out of gardens at Hull Place, Sholden. They are recorded as being in Deal Town Hall Museum, but could not be located there. On display in Deal Castle Museum (Deal Town Hall Collection), is a 6th or 7th century AD bone comb found in 1915 under additions to Hull Place (SW wing centred at TR 35685277). Roman potsherds were also found.
In 1922 (f) W.P.D Stebbing excavated concrete foundations and frescoes and other indications of occupation extending over 100 square yards, possibly a villa, 3-5 feet below the surface in the park facing the house. No further information was gained during fieldwork concerning this excavation. The site is under permanent pasture. Hull Place is now subdivided into flats and the owner of the property does not reside in the district [2-see also (Kent Archaeological Review (KAR) 60, 1980:247-248].
Additional bibliography [3-8].
The site of a villa at TR 357529. "There was a villa with painted plastered walls in front of Hull Place and just back from the shore line of that date. It probably suffered at this time of anarchy. At any rate it is interesting to note that the only coin so far found on the site was one of the Emperor Gallienus, whose disturbed reign closed in 268 AD. No finds from the excavations by W.P.D Stebbing are known. (From KAR 85, 1986-quoting Stebbing in his book 'the Invader's Shore) [9].
Field report for monument [10].
Watching brief during pipe laying at Hull Place (TR 3570 5280) in 1991, observed sections of five ditches with Roman pottery in the fill and several pits. Interpreted as field boundaries of several phases. See TR 35 SE 393 (11).
