Whilst digging a trench for a sewer, in April 1936, an ancient dug-out canoe was found at a depth of 3 feet 6 inches in the bank of a small stream close to Great Downs Bridge, Sandwich at TR 34715763. The boat was made from an oak trunk and the tool marks were clear. It was resting in estuarine deposits. Not sufficient of the boat was exposed to enable it to be placed within Fox's classification of monoxylous craft. It was later removed to Sandwich but it could not be traced there during fieldwork. (1) TR 3457. This logboat was found in 1936 near Sandwich Bay, Kent. Site type, unkown; drainage area. Stour. There is no further trace. (2) additional references (3-5)
