Summary

A Neolithic occupation site covering a wide area and dating to approximately 2000 BC was revealed during excavations on the west side of the Market Square in the 1970's. Large quantities of flint flakes, waste and associated implements were recovered from the pre-Roman land-surface. Sherds of probable fengate pottery were also found in one area. (location accurate to the nearest 100m based on available information)

TR 319415. A Neolithic occupation site, dating to approximately 2000 BC was revealed over a wide area during excavations on the west side of the Market Square undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in the 1970's. Large quantities of flint flakes, waste and associated implements were recovered from the pre-Roman land-surface. Sherds of probable fengate pottery were also found in one area. (1-3)

There is no further information about the location or circumstances of this discovery available, a report on the Prehistoric finds that were made during this work awaits publication.
