Monument details

HER Number:TR 23 NW 12
Type of record:Findspot
Name:Late Bronze Age bronze sword

Summary

A late Bronze Age bronze sword, dated between circa 1000-700 BC, was dredged from the sea in 1951, about 40 yards off shore in East Wear Bay, Folkestone, off the site of the Roman villa [see TR 23 NW 11]. It is 25.625 inches long, and is complete. The sword appears to be native, and is the only one of its type known in Kent. It has a `unique' thickened `moulding' below the outer rivet hole on each side. The finder Mr H Brice, who retained it, died some years ago and efforts by Folkestone Museum to trace its subsequent history and present whereabouts were unsuccessful.
