The Castle grounds within the medieval curtain wall of the Norman stronghold have gradually diminished in horticultural and landscaping terms since they were created in 1870.

The garden lay-out was swept away in 1931, leaving the monumental architecture of the Norman keep in a bold and simple setting with mature trees uncomplicated by exotic planting.

1870: Rochester Castle Grounds and Terrace were leased from the Earl of Jersey by Rochester Corporation in 1870.
1883: Rochester Castle Grounds and Terrace were bought from the Earl of Jersey by Rochester Corporation in 1883.

In 2013 GSB Prospection carried out a Ground Penetrating Radar survey of the grounds. Elements of the 19th century garden were detected. (1)
