TR 125342. West Hythe, listed as a deserted medieval village in Kent. (1) Maurice Beresford and John G Hurst eds. Deserted Medieval Villages, 1971 list 69 places for Kent in their County gazetteers of Deserted Medieval Villages. In most cases there is nothig to prove that there was a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village. (2) T. Tatton-Brown notes that Everitt has recently pointed out that virtually no deserted villages can be proved in Kent. However, there are some exceptions, where true deserted medieval villages are known as the reasons for desertion are obvious. These include early medieval boroughs which may have been either destroyed or 'left behind' by the sea, such as West Hythe. (TR 125342). (3)
