TR 168343. Fort Twiss Battery. 1798. (1)

The battery was a self-contained triangular fort on a small scale, and very similar in plan to the Dungeness batteries. The terreplein, slightly raised to give command of the sea, accomodated 6 x 24-pounders, and a brick loop-holed wall 3.5 metres high extended from the corners of the terreplein to form a sharp point at the rear. The main entrance, guardroom and ancillary buildings were spaced along the exterior walls. Sold in 1869 and demolished. (2-3)

Part of the outer southern wall may have been incorporated in the modern sea wall at TR 1682 3432 or at least the sea wall respects the original outline of the fort wall at this point. The site of the fort was built over by a row of houses known as Beaconsfield Terrace. (4-7)
