[TR 02307039] Tower [NR] (Site of) (NAT) (1) Tower [NR] (In ruins) (NAT) (2) Tower (site of). Applies to the site of a tower of an old Norman Church. The ancient church was erected about the 12 c. in the reign of King John and the old tower stood until 1874 when it was destroyed to make room for the present church. (3) At Leysdown once stood a small Norman church which fell into ruins. Hasted, describing it 150 years ago, said that its walls were crumbling and over them bent the tower at a dangerous angle. In his day the church could not be used, and services were carried on in a small wooden shed close by. On the site of the old church a small modern one has been erected in Early English style. (4) The small church of St. Clement at Leysdown was rebuilt in 1874 on the foundations of its Norman predecessors. (5) There are no visible remains of the pre-1874 church other than six fragments of stone, carved with chevron ornament, built into the west end of the present church in the form of a cross. Dedication to `St. Clement' confirmed by notices. In normal use. (6) Checked and correct. (7) (TR 02307040) St. Clement's Church (NAT) (8) St Clement. 1874 by R Wheeler. Ragstone and brown brick dressings. Exposed red brick inside. Chancel, nave, and tower-like bell-gable. Lancets plate-tracery and bar-tracery hierarchically arranged from to E. (9)

Demolished in 1980's.
