[TQ 913 688] Windpump, Iwade. A simple wooden post with four struts. There are four sweeps each made from a single piece of timber, with a wind vane at the rear. A vertical iron shaft through the framework operates a pump below; used for drainage of low-lying ground. (1) At Iwade, Kent, is an example of the small, skeleton, hollow post mill often used for drainage. These windpumps were skeletal framed, wound by a large weather vane, and driving the pump by common sails through a crack in the windshaft. (2) [TQ 9131 6887] Wind pump [NAT] (3) [TQ 914 688] A pumping mill once used for land drainage still stands at Iwade (see Illustration Card). The four sweeps, each of single pieces of timber without shutters, were directed to face the wind by the action of a large wind vane at the rear, while the iron shaft running vertically between the timber-framing to the pump beneath was activated by the rotating windshaft. (4). No trace of the pump itself remains but an oval, hollowed-out mound may be the platform for this structure, and may originally have been a saltern (5).
