TQ 979283. Sherds of Belgic pottery comparable with examples dated to the second quarter of the 1st century AD, were found in 1966 and 1968 by Mr R S Body in Five Watering Sewer on his land at Snargate. The potttery came from the bottom of the sewerand was only visible at the lowest water level, where it was found above the peat. Sherds from atleast fifteen pots were found (see illustration card). (1) The siting indicated by Mr Body, Hope Farm, Snargate, on his OS 25" plan at TQ 97922830 confirms the above. The sherds, in his possession, were found 3 feet 6 ins down the side of a newly re-cut channel, just above the peat line. Lumps of reddish burnt clay with the sherds suggest a kiln site. The site is now concealed by grass but two small sherds were found on the bank in the vicinity of the siting. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) Snaregate. In 1966 and 1968 Mr R S Body found a group of Belgic pottery in the side of a freshly recut channel on his land at Hope Farm. At least 15 vessels could be identified, several with either heavy cordons on the neck or combed decoration. Most seem to date from the early 1st century AD. (3)
