The following text is from the original listed building designation:
CLIFFE-AT-HOO CP REED STREET TQ 77 NW 14/12 South side The Red House GV II
House. Early C18. Red brick with red brick band discontinued over the outer windows. Plain tiled roof. L-plan. 2 storeys with attic; timber eaves cornice on modillion brackets. Regular 3 window front with glazing bar sashes, those in outer bays wider, and shutters. Central entrance altered in mid-C19 with half-glazed door and transom-light over and flat hood on brackets over. Speaking tube built into brickwork to left of door.

This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for Cliffe Parish. The report states:
"By the late 18th century Cliffe consisted of two long rows of houses and cottages along both sides of Chruch Street, with housing continuing along the north side of Rye Street (later Reed Street) and outling grouping along West Street. Red House in Reed Street…survive from this period…The 18th century a period of seemingly renewed affluence for much of the peninsula is also comparatively well represented by a number of red-brick, two-storeyed buildings...The Red House on Reed Street with timber modillioned eaves cornice."
