Description from record TR 35 SE 10:
[TR 36265185] Ch. [NAT] (1) The church of St Leonard, Deal, was largely rebuilt in the late C17th/early C18th but contains some Norman remains. (2) In normal use. (3) Church of St Leonard's (formerly listed under London Road), Rectory Road. Grade B. C12, C17 and C19. The Nave, S Aisle and Chancel arch are Norman. Red brick W tower of 3 stages with long and short quoins was added in 1684. In 1719 a large N aisle or transpet was built at right angles to the nave containing galleries. (For full description see list). (4) Most of the information can be gleaned from (4). The additional information contains details of the chancel and S chapel which "look all Victorian". The church began with a late Norman aisled nave of three bays and a chancel with a small Norman window in the E gable. There are some details of internal fittings. (5) Most of the information can be gleaned from (4). but there are some additional details. Norman nave c1180 rebuilt in the C13. A plan of 1820 shows a S porch which has now disappeared. There was a tower in the C12 but this fell and was replaced in 1686 by a brick tower. See the phased plan for additional details (illustration card no 1).
