Summary

The remains of an octagonal brick windmill are located to the east of Sandhurst. Now disused this windmill was originally a six floor smock mill, but was out of use by the early 20th century. It was the only corn mill in Kent known to have five sweeps. The mill remained derelict until the body was removed after 1945. Known as the Ringle Crouch Green windmill it was built by James Collins in 1844.

(TQ 80432841). Octagonal brick tower mill. (1) (TQ 80432841). Windmill (disused) (NAT). (2) TQ 804284. Sandhurst. Originally a smock mill, it was the only corn mill in Kent known to have five sweeps. Milling ended in the early part of this century. The mill remained derelict until the body was removed after 1945. (3) Ringle Crouch Green windmill, now lost, was built by James Collins in 1844. A well made mill of six floors, it had a brick base and there were four pairs of stones. (4)

Archive material: AA78/01372 Two men standing on the stage of Ringle Crouch Windmill with a horse drawn cart beneath Ringle Crouch Windmill was built in 1844 to replace an earlier mill on the other side of the road. It was unusual in having five sweeps, or sails. It ceased to work in 1912, and the upper part of the mill was demolished in 1945, leaving the brick base, which is now used as a store.
