[TQ 42434726] Moat (NR) (1) West of Edenbridge and west of Crouche (or Cross) House is the site of the manor house of the Browns within a moat. Jordan le Brun lived there about 1216. By 1710 only the moat remained, the house gradually having become a ruin. Another house was built called Great Browns, outside the moat (a). Crouche House became the manor house in the early nineteenth century but Great Browns remains. (2) Close to the east back of the Kent Brook is a small homestead moat; it is waterfilled, but is over-grown and in poor condition. No building remains were found, within the enclosed area: Great Browns has also disappeared. Published (25") survey correct. (3) Moat partly filled in to make fairway of golf course. (TQ 42434725) (4) Moat (NR) (5) The site of Browns Manor, Edenbridge was substantially destroyed in 1972 by bulldozers constructing the fairway of a new golf course (see survey). Sherds of medieval pottery were recovered. (6) TQ 42434726. Great Browns is listed as a moated site in the County checklist for Kent - December 1979. (7)
