Description from record TQ 84 SE 5:
(TQ 855401) Standen (NAT) (1) Standen is a 15th century, timber framed building with an elaborate timbered front and plaster infilling. It is of two storeys with attic and has a hipped tiled roof. The first floor over sails and the south west wall has been refaced in red brick on the ground floor and tile hung above. It is said to have been used by one of the Religious Houses as a hostelry for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury (2) 5272 BIDDENDEN STANDEN AREA Standen TQ84SE2/160 16.8.62. II* 2. C15 timber-framed building restored with an elaborate timbered front and plaster infilling. Part of the ground floor is close-studded. The 1st floor oversails on an embattled bressumer with a plaster cove beneath it and carved brackets. The whole of the 1st floor is decorated with ornamental timbering in diamond and semi circles. Two storeys and attics. Hipped tiled roof with 2 hipped dormers. Wooden eaves cornice. Three casement windows. Massive red brick chimneybreast on the north-east wall. The south-west wall has been refaced with red brick on the ground floor and tile hung above. The interior has oak panelling and the front room is dated 1578. The building is said to have been used by one of the religious houses as a hostelry for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. Standen. A compact front, two-storeyed and jettied across the whole of it.
