TQ 5243 4400. Traces of a homestead moat are visible on all sides of 'The Moat', a private residence, 400.0m. N. of the village of Penshurst. Distinct broad shallow depressions in the turf on the W & S sides of the house together with a bark on the N. side beneath a hedge, give the moat an approximate size of 50.0m. square. A map of 1838 (a) shows the W. arm water-filled. Miss Wood, a former owner of 'The Moat', and now living elsewhere in Penshurst, stated that the house, built about 100 years ago, contains within it, remains of a much older dwelling. (1) Not mentioned in the County checklist of moated sites in Kent, December 1979. (2)
