Summary
One of two chalk pits previously located at Bromstone (see also TR 36 NE 374). The two are marked on the 1st edition Ordnance survey map as 'Old Chalk Pits' (c.1858-1873) and on the 2nd edition map both are individually labelled as 'Old Chalk Pit' (c.1891-1898). The boundaries are visible on the 3rd edition map of c.1905-1922. This particular pit also has seven interconnecting tunnels up to 10m long cut into the north face of the pit.

Chalk extraction pit on north side of Brownstone Rd. Part of the pit has been backfilled, part still open to 7m deep accessed by an inclined plane. Seven tunnels up to 10m long cut into the north face of the pit and interconnected. Prob. C19 date.(1)
