Monument details

HER Number:TQ 77 NE 41
Type of record:Monument
Name:Anti aircraft battery, Marshgate, Cooling

Summary

Site of four three inch anti aircraft guns in a battery near Marshgate. This battery was situated at Marshgate north east of Cooling Castle. A straight track led from the village street to the guns. Accommodation and other buildings were positioned either side of this track close to the village street. The majority of these buildings had been demolished by 1946. By 1954 further buildings had been demolished and the gun emplacements and access track removed. The remaining structures have since been demolished. This battery was part of the Thames and Medway Gun Defended Area and is possibly the battery named Cooling with the number TS13, although the grid reference for this is circa 700m further east. Battery TS25 is also listed with the same easterly grid reference but may also refer to the Marshgate site. This battery was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Some features are thought to survive.
