During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 the surface of a rough trackway and possible associated side-walk was uncovered. The trackway was metalled with loose flint pebbling and overlain at one point by a single patch of tarmac. The track was at least 3.5m wide and a line of re-used stone slabs along its eastern side could have represented the paving of an informal side-walk. Selective removal of the main gravel surfacing showed that it was up to 0.15m thick resting on a double layer of laid bricks (mainly re-used frogged yellow stock bricks with very occasional reds) this brick layer was between 0.07 and 0.15m in thickness and would appear simply to have formed a base for the overlying gravel layer, rather than representing an earlier surface itself, It might have been C20th in date. Beneath this level the presence of two earlier metalled surfaces were revealed, both of pebble. (summarised from report) (1)
