During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 two areas of cobbled yard surface were uncovered at the north eastern side of the Barracks site. The yard was well preserved and in some areas was only shallowly buried under a thin layer of soil and leaf litter. In detail the external yard surfacing revealed comprised two separate sections of cobbling formed of carefully laid granite setts and divided by an area of later, laid concrete with shallow grooves in its surface probably intended to assist with drainage. (summarised from report)(1)
